Making your computer talk

Your computer can read text out loud to you. This can make using a computer easier if you:

  • find reading difficult, or
  • can not see very well.

The BBC’s My Web My Way project has some good guides that show you how to use the built-in speech function on your computer.

You can also get other software for your computer that will read text out loud. This is called screen readers software.

Click here to see some examples of screen readers.

Change the colours or contrast on your computer screen or tablet

You might find it easier to read text on your computer screen or tablet if the words and the background are a different colour.

Change how text looks to make it easy to read

Sometimes the way text looks makes it difficult to read. If the letters are a different shape they can be easier to read.

Text is sometimes called ‘font’.
